A car accident Wednesday night in North Bryan claimed the life of an Ellabell woman.

Cynthia Jones, 26, was driving east on Hwy. 280 in a 2000 Chevrolet Impala around 8 p.m. when she hit the back of a loaded log truck. The truck was turning into a parking lot about a mile east of Pembroke’s city limits, according to Georgia State Trooper Chad Gray.

Speed was not a factor in the accident, but Gray said he wasn’t sure why Jones was not able to stop before hitting the log truck. No charges are pending.

Jones was pronounced dead on the scene, Gray said. The passenger in the car, 31-year-old Morteza Fennell, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah and later released with non-life threatening injuries, he said.

Hwy. 280 was closed in both directions for about two-and-a-half hours after the accident, Gray said. The Bryan County Sheriff Department, Pembroke Police Department, Bryan County Fire and EMS also responded to the accident.
