One person was killed and another seriously injured Thursday morning in an accident on Highway 280 involving three vehicles.
Bryan County Emergency Services was dispatched at 6:13 a.m. to a motor vehicle wreck between Deer Road and I-16, according to Bryan County EMS Chief Freddy Howell.
Upon arrival, crews encountered one of the vehicles fully involved with fire with the occupant still inside and another vehicle was smoking. The fire was quickly extinguished.
The third vehicle received moderate damage and the driver was not injured.
Prior to BCES' arrival, bystanders and nearby residents used fire extinguishers to control the fire of one of the vehicles and were able to free the entrapped occupant. That person sustained significant injuries from the wreck and was transported to Memorial hospital.
The highway remained closed until approximately 10 a.m. Georgia DOT assisted with road closure and directing traffic during this time.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating. No names were released.
