The ROTC program based at Georgia Southern University recently hosted its annual fall field training exercise at Fort Stewart.
Ninety-five cadets from Eagle Battalion participated in this year’s exercise that took place Nov. 16-18.
Eagle Battalion includes students from Armstrong Atlantic State University and Savannah State University as well as Georgia Southern.
“This important training exercise takes place at the end of every fall semester and is used to both train and evaluate cadets in order to gauge their performance for the upcoming spring semester,” MS4 cadet Sean Belcher said.
The exercise is one of the last major training exercises for MS3 cadets. These cadets are preparing for a culminating exercise that will take place at Fort Lewis, Wash., during the summer of their junior year.
At Fort Stewart, the Eagle Battalion cadets began their exercise on Friday with day and night navigation.
“This training event tests a cadet’s skills at terrain association and their effective use of a map and compass,” Belcher said. “The cadets are asked to plot several coordinates on a map and then find them in a given amount of time.”
The members of Eagle Battalion awoke at 5 a.m. Saturday to begin Situational Training Exercises (STX), which are a series of short, scenario-driven, mission-oriented exercises designed to train the cadets on their five basic battle skills.
“An STX usually contains multiple collective tasks linked to form a realistic scenario of a military operation,” Belcher said.
After a full day of training, the cadets worked together to set up a patrol base where they bedded down for the night. On Sunday morning, they woke up early for retraining and packing.
“The fall FTX was very successful,” Belcher said. “We are proud that each and every one of our cadets continues to surpass the standards that they are required to meet.”
