An overturned tractor trailer shut down an exit ramp off of Interstate 95 in Richmond Hill on Monday for more than 10 hours, according to Richmond Hill Fire Chief Vernon Rushing.

Rushing said the accident happened around 2 p.m. when a tractor trailer overturned on the southbound exit 90 ramp at Interstate 95 and Highway 144.

“The tractor trailer driver apparently passed out, and the truck came down the exit ramp, left off the exit ramp and came down into the ditch between the ramp and (Interstate) 95,” Rushing said. “The truck rolled over and the driver was taken by Life Star to the hospital.”

The accident closed the ramp from about 4 p.m. Monday until around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday while crews worked to remove the truck and trailer and clear the scene, he said.

Rushing said Tuesday morning the condition of the driver was unknown.

“He was talking and all before he left, so I think he’ll be alright,” Rushing said.

Rushing did not know the age or name of the driver, but said he was hauling military hardware.

Richmond Hill Fire Department, Richmond Hill Police Department, Georgia State Patrol and Bryan County Fire Department responded to the accident, Rushing said.
