Bryan County Commission Chairman Jimmy Burnsed said he spent a sleepless night after Monday’s public hearing on a proposed 1.5 mill tax increase trying to think of a better way to explain why the county needs more revenue from taxpayers.
In the end, the genial 74-year-old stood for more than two hours before a crowd of about 25 people Thursday night at the County Courthouse in Pembroke, mixing in a civics lesson while repeatedly contrasting taxes in Bryan County with those in surrounding counties.
“I submit to you, you get a bigger bang for your buck in Bryan County than anywhere else,” Burnsed said.
