Jimmy Burnsed recalls how, almost two decades ago, a controversy brewed around the nation over the Boy Scout Oath that includes the promise to “do my duty to God and my country.”

“Some said that was not politically correct,” said Burnsed, who is the chairman of the Bryan County Commission and chief executive officer of Bryan Bank and Trust. “And some major corporations pulled funding from the Scouts.”

That didn’t sit well with Burnsed, who served as a Scout while growing up.

“That got under my skin,” he said about the flak over the oath. “(The Boy Scouts) is a great organization that builds many positive character traits in young men. So I got involved in the fundraising part of it.”
