When President-Elect Donald Trump is inaugurated Friday in Washington, D.C., one Richmond Hill High School student will be among those in attendance.
Meet Cole Barfield, 16, who plans on writing about his experiences at the event for the Bryan County News.
"I grew up interested in public service," Barfield said. "It started out with me being interested in law enforcement, but when I was in 7th grade, I transitioned to politics."
And how. Since Trump’s victory in November, Barfield said he’s set out to meet the new president.
It worked.
"I’ve been on a campaign to meet with the president-elect to talk about change for the average young American," Barfield said. "This whole campaign is about building better relationships with young people. You can check it all out on my Facebook page @getcoletotrump. My campaign went viral with all of the interviews and (U.S. Rep.) Buddy Carter reached out to me and invited me."
Barfield said he’ll be sitting fairly close to the front of the ceremony, so he should have a good view. And it’s important that he goes and sees history first hand, he said, because it’s about more than a historic occasion.
"This is important to me because it is my future. I want to be able to go into adulthood and voting age and not have to worry about the future," Barfield said. "I want to be able to be involved in what goes on in this country. Kids my age are the future of this country and our opinions and views should matter just as much. I want to help people understand what is going on in the political field. I want people to understand that if you want change, go out there and make change. I am a prime example of that."
Editor’s note: Look for Barfield’s take on his trip to the inauguration in an upcoming issue of the Bryan County News.
