If youre in Pembroke on Sept. 16, you might want to take note: Thats officially American Legion Post 164 Day.
Pembrokes American Legion post got its own day Monday night after Mayor Mary Warnell read a proclamation naming Sept. 16 as American Legion Day in the city.
This provides the opportunity to recognize the legionnaires in our community for their many contributions to our community, said Warnell, who then presented a copy to American Legion Post 164 commander James Mckinney and adjutant Ernie Mitchell while longtime post officer B.J. Clark snapped photos.
I was honored to have the privilege to recognize the American Legion Post 164 by proclaiming Sept. 16, 2014 as American Legion Day, Warnell said afterward. I am especially pleased the Legion members have selected two American Legion pillars to support, the first being Americanism and the second one the youth in our city and surrounding community through their participation in Scouts and 4-H.
The citys proclamation explained the American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 and based on four pillars veterans affairs, national security, youth and Americanism. Mitchell said Post 164 is focusing on youth and Americanism in its efforts this year.
Many dont know it, but we allow Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and and 4-H to use our home for free, Mitchell said. Unfortunately, electricity and water are not free, so any time you see us out there fundraising, were doing our best to keep our doors open for those kids.
