Couple who helped create Pembroke flag display pass away

Pembroke lost two of its most beloved residents this weekend.

Robert and Virginia Quattlebaum, who were married 66 years and during that time were instrumental in creating the city's flag display honoring veterans, died hours apart. He was 90. She was 86. 

Virginia Quattlebaum died Sunday night, Robert Quattlebaum passed a few hours later Monday morning, according to the obituary. Both suffered from extended illnesses.  

The couple were honored Memorial Day in Pembroke and have a street named after them. 

"They were the real American story," Pembroke Downtown Development Authority Director Alex Floyd said. "They lived, worked, prayed and raised their family in their town. They served their country and their community."
