County approves recycling contract

Starting May 1, residents of unincorporated Bryan County can have their recycled items hauled away by Republic Waste Services of Savannah instead of taking them to landfills or mixing them with other refuse.

The company’s contract for twice-monthly curbside recycling pickup was approved Tuesday by the Bryan County Board of Commissioners and calls for an annual recycling fee of $35 per household.

While most homeowners will see the fee tacked onto their tax bills in November, the owners of mobile homes that are considered personal property will see the charge added to their taxes immediately, County Administrator Phil Jones said.

The fee will remain the same for the duration of the contract, which will expire in February 2016. Republic Waste has provided waste-removal services for the county since 1997.
