BCHS graduation could move to Savannah

Bryan County High School’s 2017 commencement ceremony could be held at the Savannah Civic Center, according to school district officials.

“They have much larger graduating classes coming up and we’ve outgrown the facility,” Superintendent Paul Brooksher told the school board during its work session Thursday night.

The class of 2016, one of the smallest in recent years, had 112 members and the school gym was filled beyond capacity.

Trey Robertson, assistant superintendent for operations and student services, said administrators are leaning toward the Savannah Civic Center because the district already rents it out for practice and commencement ceremonies for Richmond Hill High School.

“We could do Bryan County in the morning and Richmond Hill in the afternoon,” he said. “We’d only be paying one fee for set up, audio, things like that.”

Another consideration was Hanner Fieldhouse on the campus of Georgia Southern University, but Robertson said that would cost an extra $6,000 to have the stage, seating and audio.

“Plus it’s only about five minutes closer of a drive,” he said.

Both high schools are scheduled to hold graduation on May 20, 2017.
