ATLANTA —  Sen. Ben Watson, R-Savannah, has been appointed by the Senate Committee on Assignments to the Transportation Committee for the 2016 session.

He will also serve as a member of several other Senate committees.

“I am honored to have been newly selected by our lieutenant governor to serve on the Transportation Committee, in addition to my other committee duties,” Watson said. “I look forward to entering the 2016 legislative session with a fresh perspective on issues facing constituents, and working to ensure a stronger and more successful Georgia.”

Watson will also serve as vice chairman of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee, and as a member of the Health and Human Services, Public Safety and Ethics committees.

“The Georgia State Senate’s top priority is preserving Georgia’s reputation as a leading state for business development, job creation and educational opportunity. I look forward to working directly with Senate leadership in order to find real solutions for Georgia’s most significant and pressing issues,” Lt. Gov. Cagle said.

“We are fortunate to have a wealth of talent and experience in the State Senate,” said President Pro Tem David Shafer, R-Duluth.

Once a piece of legislation is introduced in the Senate, it is assigned to a committee, depending on its topic. If the committee gives the legislation a “do pass” recommendation, then the proposed law is sent to the Rules Committee for consideration.

The second session of the 153rd Georgia General Assembly will convene Jan. 11, at the State Capitol.
