Highway 280 between Groover Hill Road and Olive Branch Road was shut down for hours Thursday night as authorities investigated an incident in which a man was shot by a state law enforcement officer during a chase that began when the man’s pickup struck another vehicle on 280 near the I-16 exit in Black Creek.

The officer, who serves with the Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Compliance Division, was injured during the chase, and was taken to Memorial Medical Center in Savannah. His injuries were not life threatening, authorities said. The shooting is under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

The incident began around 6:40 p.m., according to Bryan County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Jennifer Fleming, who confirmed the officer fired his weapon.

She said there was no threat to public safety, though the road would be remain closed for several hours.

According to a witness at the Marathon station at Exit 143, a driver in a pickup trying to make a U-turn on 280 was hit by the suspect’s vehicle. The MCCD officer saw what happened and chased the suspect.

Bryan County Coroner Bill Cox said his office was called to the scene due to a death, but was unable to provide details.
