Help area seniors by donating empty print cartridges
Toner fund project

The Georgia Southern University area Senior Companions program that provides assistance and friendship to those over 55 is asking the public for help with its latest fundraiser.

Businesses, professional offices, schools, banks, hospitals, libraries, etc. are asked to collect empty printer/copier cartridges. The organization can leave a collection box for the used cartridges at the business location.

If you would like a box delivered please call 912-478-0712.

The funds raised will help the frail, elderly and disabled people in our communities stay in their own homes and preserve their independence instead of placing them in a facility.

The GSU Area Senior Companion program serves nine counties including: Bryan, Bulloch, Screven, Evans, Candler, Effingham, Emanuel, Jenkins, and Tattnall.

It began in the late 1980s with a federal grant from the Corporation for National and Community Services. Some of its original volunteers are still with the program after all these years. The oldest original volunteer is 93 years old and still volunteers each week.

Volunteers visit frail older adults, adults with disabilities,  and those with terminal illnesses who still want to stay in their own home and not be put in a facility. The volunteers also assist with simple chores to maintain sanitary living conditions and assist with meals. They offer limited transportation to doctor appointments, grocery stores, hair appointments, or social outings.
