The Freeman Project is now accepting applications for its annual USMC Capt. Matthew Freeman Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was established to honor the life of Matthew Freeman after he was killed in action on August 7, 2009 in Afghanistan.

Matthew graduated from Richmond Hill High School with honors in 1998 and went to the United States Naval Academy where he was able to fulfill his life-long dream of becoming a Marine Corps aviator.

A student exhibiting the same high academic standards, leadership, community involvement and dedication to God and country as Matthew will be awarded this scholarship.

Graduating seniors, residing in Bryan County and attending Bryan County High School, Richmond Hill High School, a private high school or an accredited home school program, who meet the application’s criteria are encouraged to apply by May 13, 2022. Completed applications must be submitted no later than May 13 to Memorial Scholarship, c/o Lisa Freeman, PO Box 1608, Richmond Hill, GA 31324. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Scholarship finalists will be asked to participate in an interview with Freeman Scholarship board.

Since the inaugural scholarship was presented in 2010, thousands of dollars has been awarded to graduates of Richmond Hill High School and presented during the high school’s Senior Awards Night. This year applications are now open to all graduating seniors in Bryan County, who meet the application criteria, and the $3,000 USMC Capt. Matthew Freeman Memorial Scholarship will be presented at an event to be named later.
