Richmond Hill Lions Club will partner with United Way of the Coastal Empire to distribute 1,920 boxes of fresh fruit and produce at two locations in Bryan County on July 21.

This hunger relief effort will help many people who are in need due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in both north and south Bryan County. No proof of residency or income is required to receive a food box.

Food distribution will begin on the morning of July 21, at 9 a.m. at the Pembroke Christian Church, 116 W Bacon Street in Pembroke, and at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill, 9184 Ford Avenue in Richmond Hill.

People who wish to receive a food box should remain inside their vehicles at the distribution sites while volunteers load into car trunks or back seats. Volunteers will utilize masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, and practice social distancing.

Lions Clubs of Georgia have partnered with Collins Brothers Produce of Forest Park, Georgia to participate in the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program and make the July 21 food distribution possible. As part of the Coronavirus Farm Assistance Program U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced on April 17 that USDA is exercising authority under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act to purchase and distribute agricultural products to those in need. Through this program, USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is partnering with national, regional and local suppliers, whose workforce has been significantly impacted by the closure of restaurants, hotels and other food service businesses.

Mark Anners, District Governor for District 18-N said, “Where There’s a Need, There’s a Lion. Over 4,500 Lions Clubs members, from over 150 Lions Clubs in Georgia, constantly work together to serve our communities whether it is an emergency pandemic crisis like COVID-19 or ordinary issues with vision & hearing care, diabetes awareness and prevention, fighting hunger, battling childhood cancer, helping environmental causes, and many other humanitarian activities.”

This Bryan County food distribution event is truly a community effort involving not only the Richmond Hill Lions Club and United Way of the Coastal Empire but also Bryan County Family Connections, Pembroke Advanced Communications, Pembroke Christian Church, First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill, and a huge number of community volunteers.
