More than a thousand voters turned out for the Richmond Hill city election Tuesday.

Harold Fowler defeated Floyd Hilliard for mayor with 580 votes to 422 votes.

"I really appreciate the people’s vote of confidence in me, and I look forward to serving the next four years," Fowler said. "As soon as I get sworn in, I will begin work on items in my platform."

"We tried our best," Hilliard said. "I ran a clean race, and I ran on facts. But the people spoke and I respect 100 percent what the people want. Harold has my full support and I fully respect him as my new mayor."

In races for city council, Russ Carpenter garnered 609 votes to defeat Darryl Petermann for the Post 2 council seat. Petermann got 375 votes. Van Hunter defeated Post 1 incumbent JoAnn Bickley by a 541-422 margin.

Numbers for the Buddy Carter versus Billy Hare state senate race were not available.
