Jekyll Island revitalization moves forward

Jekyll Island will soon be home to a new convention center, hotel and beach village retail space.
JEKYLL ISLAND — The Jekyll Island Authority announced recently that three companies have been selected to join the Jekyll Island beach village project. They will build two new hotels and new retail space for the island. Following a request for proposal process, the board of directors approved the recommendations made by the Jekyll Island Authority evaluation committee, and project development agreements will be finalized with each company.
Owners of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel were selected to develop a new 200-room, full-service beachfront hotel on the village green adjacent to the planned new convention center. Club Hotel owners also operate the new Jekyll Island Hampton Inn & Suites.
Phelps Development of Greeley, Colo., in partnership with The Chhatrala Group of San Diego, Calif., was selected to develop a new 140-room, mid-scale hotel in the heart of the new beach village and a block from the new convention center.
Winding Road Development Company of Scottsdale, Ariz., a leader in the design and construction of village-centered resorts, was selected as the developer for the beach village retail space, which coordinators say will be the social hub for the revitalized public beach resort. The plan consists of a mix of restaurants, shops, a bank, a post office, a village green for entertainment and loft residences, all of which will be adjacent to the convention center.
“We are delighted with the authority’s selection,” said Bob Krueger, chairman of the Jekyll Island Authority board of directors. “This was is another big step forward and I am very impressed with the quality of the proposal received.”
In January, the authority began an effort to attract and secure developers for the primary retail and hospitality components of the planned beach village.  Through a request for information and developers showcases, the authority chose its developers. All information related to the selection process is available on the Jekyll Island Authority’s Web site, www.jekyllisland.com.
“I firmly believe we’ve found three outstanding developers to take Jekyll Island’s revitalization efforts to the next level,” Jekyll Island Authority Executive Director Jones Hooks said. “Given today’s economic challenges, this commitment represents a strong endorsement of Jekyll Island’s potential and our overall revitalization program.”
The project development agreements will be finalized and presented to the board for approval Wednesday. A public information session will follow the board meeting that evening.
