This July 2 incident slipped under the radar. According to a Bryan County Sheriff’s Office incident report, a 48-yearold woman was driving with a female passenger down Strathy Hall Drive around 10:20 p.m. on that Sunday when she hit a power pole.
A deputy responding found a power pole knocked down, power lines strung out all over a resident’s yard and, beneath the power lines, the passenger, who was discovered at some point during the response to the accident.
The passenger, who had an Ohio driver’s license and was the owner of the car, was taken by EMS to Memorial, the report said. She reportedly told authorities she got out of the car on her own.
The driver, meanwhile, failed a field sobriety test, according to a Richmond Hill Police Department incident report and was arrested. Among the charges filed against her are driving too fast for conditions and failing to maintain lane.
A deputy talked with homeowners impacted by the incident, “who reported property damage and no power to their homes.”
One family reported damage to their mailbox and trash can. The other family there was damage to the mailbox, trashcan and “exterior of the residence where the wires attached to the power line have ‘ripped’ from the roof and interior garage.”
Coastal Electric technicians came over to turn the power off to other homes.
“After speaking with (a Coastal supervisor) there is damage to the power line wires, transformer, the power pole was broken into pieces, and an oil spill as a result of the vehicle accident in front of (a home),” the report said. “Case number was provided, to all parties with visible property damage.” In addition, one victim’s home was built in the 1970s, so it had to be brought up to current codes before power could be reconnected.
The total cost to the victim to restore power, which took a couple of days due to the holiday, is estimated at $6,000 so far, reports said.
