2020 promises to be busy election season. Open posts include sheriff, commission chair

Among the flotsam and jetsam filling up email inboxes of newspaper reporters these days is a press release citing a survey which claims 36 percent of Georgia residents have voter fatigue.

If this is you, don’t expect to get much rest in 2020.

In addition to 2020 being a presidential election year, voters will be asked to pick U.S. and state representatives.

What’s more, there are a number of countywide offices up for grabs as well in 2020, including those of sheriff, tax commissioner and chairman of the Bryan County Board of Commissioners, as well as several others.

In most cases, incumbents are expected to seek re-election and may or may not have challengers.

That’s not the story in the race to be Bryan County’s top elected law enforcement official. With longtime Sheriff Clyde Smith reportedly retiring there’s already been a veritable avalanche of billboards and yard signs and Facebook pages and other forms of stumping from candidates hoping to fill his seat.

As a reminder, neither they nor those declaring their bid for other seats, are officially candidates until they actually qualify, and that process won’t begin until March 2 for those planning to run as either a Republican or Democrat.

That holds true for incumbents as well.

Once qualifying ends, there will be an almost steady stream of election-related information coming our way – from when and where to register to when and where one can vote in various primaries, so on up until the general election in November.

Much of it is available on the Georgia Secretary of State’s website at sos.ga.gov, and voters are encouraged to check out their "MyVoter" pages.

If you’re thinking about running for an office, here’s a list of county seats on the ballot in 2020 as well as their qualifying fees and the incumbent, if any.

Candidates will qualify in the Bryan County Board of Commissioners meeting room at the South Bryan Administrative Complex in Richmond Hill.
