HAIFAX, Va. I got pulled over for the first time this year.

In my 11 years of driving experience, Ive never gotten a moving violation or been flagged down by a police officer. Even though I commute to and from Salt Lake City from Ogden five times a week, Id avoided any brush with authority. If you know me, you know Im very averse to breaking rules.

That streak came to an end this spring when I was pulled over on my way home from work, two blocks from my house after a weekend shift at work, when I got pulled over on an empty street for rolling a stop sign. Though no ticket was issued, it left me a little rattled. Everyones stomach drops when they pass a police car, even if they havent done anything wrong. Flashing lights in one's rearview mirror is one of the last things you want to see while driving.

Police Chief Kevin Lands and officer Brian Warner pulled over cars on a hot day in Virginia, citing vehicle violation code 1.7.3.9, which states that its actually against the law to drive on a hot day without an ice cream cone.

The department workers said they were just hoping to put a smile on peoples faces with their initiative. I think it worked.
