Register now for a trip to see the Daytona 500, billed as NASCAR’s biggest, richest and most prestigious event.  The sign-up deadline is Friday (Feb. 18) and the race is on Feb. 20.

Forty-three of the best stock car drivers in the world will compete in what is called “The Great American Race.”  

The cost is $65 per person, which includes transportation on a luxury motor coach bus and a tailgate party with food. Tickets for the race can be purchased through Leisure Travel.

Children Celebrate Presidents’ Day

Children will celebrate Presidents’ Day with stories and crafts in honor of past presidents at the George P. Hays Library, building 411, from 4-5 p.m. Feb. 23 on Fort Stewart. There is no charge. For more information, call 767-2828.

 

Registration for Pheasant Shoots at Stewart

Registration will close Feb. 23 for morning and afternoon Pheasant Shoots to be held March 5 at the Taylors Creek DZ off Highway 144 West on Fort Stewart.   

Twenty-two shooters for a morning hunt and 22 for an afternoon hunt will be chosen by lottery on Feb. 24.  

Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield Active Duty Soldiers, retirees, Army employees and sportsmen from the surrounding community can register for the lottery drawing at the Stewart Pass and Permit Office, building 8093, or the Hunter Pass and Permit Office, building 1286. There is no charge to register.

Youth Track & Field/Spring Soccer Registration

Black History Tour Trip in Savannah

Join Leisure Travel Feb. 26 for the Freedom Trail tour and see remnants of the Underground Railroad, where “free persons of color” lived during slavery times, the port of entry where slaves were brought and sold, old communities and Savannah's African American monument.

Youth Sponsorship Cumberland Island Trip Registration

CYSS registered youth will travel to Cumberland Island Seashore from 6:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.  March 26. The great barrier island off the Georgia coast is known for its wild ponies, pristine beaches and forests, Dungeness Castle and First African Baptist Church.

Trip is designed for CYSS registered youth (grades 4-12) to learn more about their surroundings and meet new friends. Registration begins Feb. 14 and continues through March 24.

The fee of $10 includes transportation, ferry crossing, and child supervision.

Tickets can be purchased at Parent Central Services, 912-767-2312 (Stewart) or 912-315-5425 (Hunter). No refunds granted after March 24 and a $5 cancellation fee will be applied after  March 24 or for no-shows.

Community Showcase/Travel Shows

Community Showcase/Travel Shows are scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Tominac Fitness Center, building 919, on March 8, and from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 9 at Club Stewart, building 405.

The events provide Soldiers and Families from Fort Stewart /Hunter Army Airfield an opportunity to learn about travel, education and recreation opportunities in the surrounding area. This is the eleventh year the events have been held. 

While the travel show features activities like tours, resorts, and travel tips, the showcase also will include information about what is available in surrounding communities throughout Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.

Booths will be staffed by local community Chambers of Commerce, visitors bureaus, art clubs, cultural resources, health care and support groups.

In addition to the information available, there will be door prizes and giveaways. There is no charge to attend.

BOSS Skydiving

Registration will continue through March 9 for the BOSS Skydiving event planned for noon-4 p. m. March 12 at the Atlanta Skydiving Farm. Participants will tandem jump from 14,000 feet.

The cost is $130 per person. An additional $100 will get the jump filmed and photographed.

College Am at Hunter Golf Club March 10

Hunter Golf Club is the site for the 13th Annual Omni Financial-Ohio Wesleyan University Collegiate Golf Tournament, an event that will see players from nine men’s teams and six women’s teams competing.

The first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament will be played March 11 and the third round on March 12.

On March 10, Soldiers, retirees, Army Civilians and guests and members of Hunter and Taylors Creek Golf Club will get a chance to tee it up with potential future PGA Tour stars in the collegiate/amateur round.  

Eighteen three-person teams will be accepted for the College Am. Each team will be paired up with one of the college competitors. The entry fee is $50 per player for Active Duty, Retirees, DOD Civilians and Taylors Creek/Hunter Golf Club members. The cost is $60 for civilian guests.

Deadline for entry into the College-Am is March 8.

Stewart/Hunter Golf Director Tommie McArthur said he will do everything possible to match up College-Am guest players with the school they request, provided they make reservations early.

Participating schools in the Men’s Division are Ohio Wesleyan University (host school); University of North Carolina at Greensboro; (College of) Mount St. Joseph’s University, University of Pennsylvania, Bryant University, Ohio Dominican University, Wittenberg University, Shenandoah University and Urbana University.

Participating schools in the Women’s Division are Ohio Wesleyan, Savannah State University, University of Pennsylvania, Ohio Dominican, Wittenberg and Urbana. 

 

Fitness First: The Amazing Race

Soldiers and Families at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield will climb a rock wall, knock down bowling pins, hit softballs, hit targets with a paint gun, Kayak across a lake and otherwise have a ball as they compete on March 12 in Fitness First: The Amazing Race. 

Challenges the Families will face in the fun-filled competition will depend on where they are competing.

At Fort Stewart, they will advance and have their “passport” stamped as they complete the tasks of knocking three softballs into the outfield at the Sports Complex, knock down a rack of pins at Marne Lanes, make five free throws at Newman Gym, complete a Wii Fit Challenge at Jordan Gym, Climb the Rock Wall at Corkan Family Recreation Center and knock down a rack of pins at Stewart Lanes.

The race at Hunter will be no less challenging. There, Families will kayak across Lake Hallstrom, hit targets with a paintball gun at the Skeet Range, hit a golf ball 70 yards or more three times at the Hunter Golf Club and knock down a rack of pins at Hunter Lanes.

Upon completion of the course Families will be put in for a drawing to win a new television, Wii or Wii Fit.

Girl Scout Day at Corkan Recreation

Girl Scouts who wear their uniforms will be given one free game/admission at all Corkan Family Recreation facilities all day on March 12. It is Corkan’s way of joining the scouts in celebrating the anniversary of their founding. For more information, call 912-767-4273.

 

Big Lift Power Lifting Competition

Registration is under way for The Big Lift Power Lifting Competition, offering competitors the chance to compete in three lifts with others in their weight class, will be held at the Newman Fitness Center starting at 10 a.m. on March 19.

Would-be champions can register until the day of the event.  The fees are $10 for early registration and $15 for late registration, after March 11. For more information, call 912-767-3031/9336.

The BIG Power Lifting Competition will consist of three lifts: Squat, Bench Press and Dead Lift. Lifters will compete for trophies in their particular weight class.
