Fall sport registration starting already

Spend July 25 at Adventure Landing's Shipwreck Island Water Park in Jacksonville Beach on a Leisure Travel day trip.

Registration for youth fall soccer on Hunter starts June 30 and runs through July, with practice beginning in mid-August. Play starts in late September at Hunter Youth Sports and Savannah YMCA fields.

Play is open to boys and girls ages 4-11. Teams are coed. Sign up at Parent Central Services, 315-5425 or https://webtrac.mwr.army.mil/webtrac/huntercyms.html. The cost is $20 per child for ages 4-5, and $40 per child for all others.

Foot golf league

A company-level foot golf league begins the week of July 13 at Hunter Golf Course.

Companies can enter by submitting a memo at Squires Sports Complex from June 29-July 10. Games will be played Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m. The cost is $5 per player per match, with minimum of two-player and maximum of four-player teams. Players must provide their own size 5 soccer ball, or balls can be rented through Hunter Golf.

Fourth of July

Stewart/Hunter will celebrate Independence Day and civilians will be invited. The celebrations are free.

At Hunter, the celebration will be held at 8:30 p.m. on July 2 at the Family Day Field at the corner of Stephen Douglas Street and Cook Boulevard. Patriotic, ceremonial music by the 3rd ID Band will set the stage for a fireworks display to begin at about 9:15 p.m.

On July 3 at Stewart's Cottrell Field, a Salute to the Nation will include music by the 3rd ID Band. The ceremony will begin at 8:30 p.m. and will be followed by fireworks. The colorful ceremony will include the firing of one artillery round for each of America's 50 states. Old Glory and the flags of each state and the nation's eight territories will be presented and a brief history given.

Dinner and bowling

Families can bowl and eat dinner at a discount from noon-8 p.m. June 28 at Stewart Bowling Center. For $30, a family of five gets two games per person, shoe rental, and dinner. For more information, call 767-4273.

 

Cosmic bowling

Come out to Marne Bowling Center on Fridays and Saturdays from 7-11 p.m. all summer (July 3-Aug. 22) for two hours of unlimited bowling for $7.50 per person for groups of 1-4 or $5 per person for groups of 5-6. Shoe rental is extra. For more information, call 767-4866.

 

Red, White and Blue Golf

Salute the nation in a two-person golf scramble starting at 9 a.m. July 4 at Taylors Creek Golf Course. Scramble is open to the public. The $35 per-player cost includes fees, golf car and lunch. For more information, call 767-2370.

 

Indoor pool work

Installation of retractable pool covers will temporarily close of Hunter/Stewart’s indoor pools in July. Dates are: Johnson Fitness Center, July 6-13; Newman Fitness Center Pool, July 14-19, and Tominac Fitness Center, July 20-24. The thermal covers and supposed to conserve energy.

 

Penny-A-Point Bowling

Enjoy Penny-A-Point total games from 1-9 p.m. on Mondays during July at Stewart Bowling Center. Total points for all games you bowl is what you pay. Shoe rental is $2. For more information, call 767-4273.

 

GC's foot golf scramble

Everyone’s welcome in the Garrison Commander’s Two-Person Foot Golf scramble at Hunter Golf Course starting 9 a.m. July 10. Bring a 2-person team to challenge the garrison team. Indoor or turf shoes permitted, but cleats are not allowed. Register by July 9. The $30 per person cost includes entry, golf cart, ball rental, lunch and prizes. Junior golf camp

Junior Golf Camp will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. July 13-17 at Taylors Creek Golf Course. It is for youth ages 6-12 and includes putting, approach shots, rules and etiquette. No previous experience is necessary.

Juniors can bring equipment, but clubs will be provided for those who do not have their own.

The $150 fee includes instruction, booklets, caps, balls and tees. A tournament, with lunch provided, will be held on the final day

‘Jungle Book’

Ticket are on sale for the Stewart/Hunter Community Theatre’s adaptation of Kipling's classic adventure story, "The Jungle Book." Performances, at Woodruff Theater, are scheduled for July 17 at 6:30 p.m. and July 19 at 3 and 6 p.m.

Precocious Mowgli grows up believing he's as fierce a wolf as any members of his pack. Will he decide to remain with the pack, or return to the human?

Tickets are on sale through July 16 at Fort Stewart Leisure Travel and Stewart Lanes Bowling Center. Prices are $12 for adults, $7 for 9 and under, or $30 per family of four.

Movies Under the Stars

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” PG-13, is the next film in the Holbrook Movies Under the Stars series. It will be shown at 8:30 p.m. July 17. 

It’s free. Movie-goers should bring chairs or blankets. Popcorn and drinks will be sold.

The next in the series will be “How to train your Dragon 2,” on Aug. 22.

Whitewater fun

Have fun in Charlotte, North Carolina, kayaking, whitewater rafting, ziplining, biking, canoeing and more on this Leisure Travel trip to the U.S. National Whitewater Center on July 18.

That evening, listen to “This Mountain” as part of the River Jam concert series, then check into a hotel for the night.
