A touring ballet troupe will light up Hinesville next week.
The Dance Theatre of Harlem will perform at the Shuman Recreation Center twice Tuesday, with a 6 p.m. performance open to the public and an afternoon show for area students. Tickets to the 90-minute evening show are $25 and can be purchased online through the Hinesville Area Arts Council’s website, www.hinesvillearts.com.
The group is a multicultural dance institution. The troupe’s ensemble, which will perform here, was founded in 2004 and has toured more than 35 cities in 26 states. Its 12 dancers and single pianist will perform a range of mixed repertoire.
At the school performance, students will watch the troupe perform and take part in their own dance workshop before performing a group number, said Retired Army Col. Shatrece Buchanan, owner of Bryant Buchanan Productions, which is coordinating the show.
“It is a type of culture that we ordinarily don’t get to see …,” she said. “It is something we need to expose ourselves to, because whatever you come from, whatever your background is, it is a good thing … to encourage people to seek different forms of art and activities.”
