'Crazy, Stupid, Love' a definite charmer

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” tops the box office this week. “The Smurfs” and “Cowboys & Aliens” follow close behind, with new comedy “The Change-Up” in the No. 4 spot. “Captain America” is No. 5 and the final Harry Potter film is No. 6.
What did I see last weekend? Well, the comedy is No. 7 at the box office in its second week out, and it’s called “Crazy, Stupid, Love.”
In the story, Steve Carell is a one-woman kind of man whose wife, acted by Julianne Moore, has cheated with a coworker and wants a divorce. Who is the coworker? Kevin Bacon.
If you’re going to cheat on funnyman Carell, it ought to be with someone smooth like Bacon, right?
Carell, it turns out, is lousy at his newfound singleness and decides to haunt a hip bar with his sob story night after night until ladies’ man — and that’s multiple ladies, for sure — Ryan Gosling takes pity and takes Carell under his wing.
Of course the irony is that just when Carell masters the art of the meaningless pickup, his personal Mr. Miyagi falls hard for no-frills Emma Stone.
“Crazy, Stupid, Love” is definitely a charmer. I did expect a few more laughs, but as usual, the best one-liners are spoiled by the trailers. Still, a completely insane twist shows its face late in the game and I was delighted.
I’d call this a family-friendly picture. It’s a saucy PG-13. There’s some kick, but I’d watch it with my Aunt Silvana. That’s just my personal measure.
The biggest flaw of the film came when Gosling and Stone finally started to click. I felt like a piece was cut out between the spark and their status as inseparable. The audience just has to buy it, and if you’re like me, you like to see proof.
But, I’m a fan. There was some originality in this one, and I think you’ll like it, too.
