Fort McAllister State Park announces its spring events scheduled for April. All events take place at the park at 3894 Fort McAllister Road, Richmond Hill.

Civil War Trust Volunteer Day: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 7. Volunteers will be trimming plants, painting, cleaning and doing other maintenance all around the fort grounds. Lunch will be provided and no fees will be charged for volunteers. Volunteers should call ahead to register: 912-727-2339.

Beginner Archery: noon-1 p.m. April 6; 10 a.m. to noon April 28-29. Kids and adults can learn the basics of shooting a compound bow in a safe environment. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 912-727-233 Admission is $20 and parking is $5.

Soldier Saturday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 7 and 28. The fort’s plantation house will be open and ready to be explored. A park ranger and a Civil War soldier will entertain topics of conversation ranging from fort history to spinning wool. Admission is $5-$9.

Sunday Morning Hikes: 10-11 a.m. April 8, 15 and 29. Ranger will lead a short hike to discuss different topics ranging from flora and fauna to natural remedies. Admission is $2 and parking is $5.

Edible Plant Hike: 1-2 p.m. April 8, 15 and 29. Learn helpful tricks to identifying edible wild plants in Georgia. Enjoy a beautiful and scenic hike with a park naturalist while searching for local plants that have medicinal properties or are used for tea or seasonings and others that could be poisonous. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a 6-foot leash. Admission is $2 and parking is $5.

Friday at the Forge: 4-5 p.m. April 20. Come and learn all about how a blacksmiths forge works. Fort blacksmiths will work the hot metal and cast musket balls. Admission is $5-$9.

Sunset Bat Hike: 7:30-8:30 p.m. April 20 and 27. Join rangers to watch flying friends take off over the setting sun. The hike includes a short half-mile walk over our beautiful marshes and winding creeks. Guests will meet rangers at the park office and museum. Admission is $2 and parking is $5.

Earth Day Paddle Trip: 9 a.m. to noon April 22. Celebrate Earth Day with a paddle through the marsh. Learn about the river and the coastal Georgia ecosystem and why it is important to keep it healthy. Register in advance. Admission is $20 and parking is $5.
