The Savannah Children’s Choir will offer a summer camp July 16-27 at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church at 1008 Henry St.
The two-week camp is open to children entering second grade through eighth grade. It serves as the only audition for the 2012-13 Savannah Children’s Choir.
Instead of performing an end-of-camp concert like in past years, the Savannah Children’s Choir will produce an end-of-camp show.
The event includes music, singing, dancing, acting and choreography and is set for 7 p.m. July 27 at the church.
In addition to the core classes of sight singing, music history and music theory, campers also will experience classes in dance, movement and drama.
They’ll explore various types of dance, including step dancing. Campers will learn how to use their bodies and faces to communicate expressively — whether moving around or standing still.
The camp includes group choral work, playtime, healthy snacks and afternoon enrichment — a daily concert to entertain, educate and build audience skills.
The Savannah Children’s Choir also offers a mini camp for children ages 4-7. The one-week, half-day program teaches core musical concepts through fun and play. Mini campers also get to participate in the end-of-camp show.
The summer camps also serve as a college internship program. Classes are taught by college students who are earning advanced degrees in music education and related fields.
Under the supervision of the Savannah Children Choir’s director of education, college instructors put their knowledge to practical use and gain real-world experience, while campers benefit from up-to-date materials and instruction methods.
The final registration deadline is June 15. There is an early-bird discount for those who register by May 1. Online registration and need-based financial aid are available.
