Ogeechee Riverkeeper will lead a special supermoon paddle trip on Dec. 3. Participants will meet at the Savannah-Ogeechee Canal, 681 Fort Argyle Road in Savannah, at 3 p.m. and launch at 3:30 p.m.
This two-hour paddle will end at Kings Ferry, near Love’s Seafood and Steaks. Participants can join the group for a dinner at Love’s following the paddle trip to watch the moon rise, which will happen at 5:48 p.m.
Luke Roberson, Ogeechee Riverkeeper’s outreach and water quality specialist, will lead this trip. Participants should bring snacks, water bottles, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, water shoes or tennis shoes (flip-flops and sandals are not recommended) and a dry bag or way to store personal items.
“This is a great opportunity for paddlers of any level to have a cool afternoon on the water followed by a terrific view of the sunset and a supermoon rising over the river,” said Roberson. “There are few things better than a relaxing float, following the tide, and finishing it off with a great meal with a beautiful view. We’re lucky to live in an area where we can enjoy these things in succession.”
Ogeechee Riverkeeper, a nonprofit organization with the mission to protect, preserve and improve the water quality of the Ogeechee River basin, has offered guided paddle trips for the past three years. These trips allow participants to experience the natural beauty of southern “blackwater” rivers, observe wildlife and establish camaraderie with fellow paddlers while enjoying the tranquility and intimacy of floating right on the water’s surface.
Ogeechee Riverkeeper asks that participants bring headlamps due to the paddle concluding at sunset. Paddlers will need to pay $6 to put in at the Savannah-Ogeechee Canal. Registration for non-members for this special paddle costs $35 per person while Ogeechee Riverkeeper members are invited to join these paddles at no cost. Ogeechee Riverkeeper memberships begin at the individual level of $35.
