It is the last weekend of February. Soon the flowers and buds on the trees will be bursting out in their glorious colors.
About five years ago my wife and I moved into our new home, and since then we have spent much time and much money on landscaping. She can tell you the names of each plant: azaleas, rhododendrons, roses, and on it goes. I like the red ones and the purple ones and the pink ones. Well, you get the picture.
I must admit, the beauty of all of those trees and plants as they do what they do in the spring of the year is amazing to me. When they bloom, it is overwhelming. And as I see it all, I am reminded of the words of Jesus.
The Lord was teaching his listeners about the futility of worrying. He spoke of the flowers of the field, almost certainly wildflowers that were not tended by anyone. He talked about their beauty by saying, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like on of these.”
Then Jesus said something that was very powerful. “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field …will he not much more clothe you.” In other words, Jesus was telling the people gathered to listen to him – that they were of much greater value to God than flowers and grass.
And that is still true today. Human beings – men, women, girls and boys – are the crowning glory of God’s creation. He loves us and wants the very best for us at all times.
That is why it is so foolish of us to worry. God knows our needs better than we do. He knows what we have faced, what we are facing and what we will face. And he is prepared to help us along the way. But when we worry, we declare that we do not trust him to care for us.
My Granny used to say, “I’m not worried. I’m just concerned.” Well, as much as I loved my Granny, God didn’t want her to be so concerned that she could not see his hand at work in her life. God has promised, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
This spring, as the flowers and trees bud and bloom, be reminded of the care that God gives to these plants in nature. And then remember that he loves you more than these.
And trust him to meet your needs. You will be glad you did.
