Identify yourself as a believer

My wife and I took a short trip to the state of Maine early last summer. We didn’t prepare ourselves for the cool evenings with the clothing we packed. So the second day we were there, we went to the store and bought a couple of jackets with the state name and emblem on them.
On several occasions this winter, I have gone to the closet, grabbed this jacket and worn it out in public. The responses I have received kind of surprised me. Several people, some of whom I have never met before, have come up and presumed that I am from the state of Maine. Most of the time, it has been people who either live in the state or have lived there. I’m sure there were some who didn’t say anything who presumed that I had just visited there.
As I thought about this, my mind went to a spiritual application. In others’ minds, the jacket I wore gave me an identity — either I was from there or I probably visited there. As Christians, there ought to be something about us that identifies us with Christ. Our attitudes, words and our actions should match up to what the Christian life should be like.
As others watch our lives, they at least ought to wonder if there is a possibility that we are believers. I think we need to ask ourselves this question, “If Christianity became illegal, would there be enough evidence to convict us?” Could we say with the Apostle Paul as in 1 Corinthians 11:1,”Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ”?
