As I was looking through the gospels the other day, I noticed that those who came to Jesus Christ were usually coming to him out of desperation.

There were those who had been crippled or blind since birth, those who needed deliverance from demon possession, those who had a loved one die and desired for Jesus to raise them up.

They found no hope anywhere else and had previously given up until they heard of Jesus, who could perform miracles. The Lord honored that spirit of desperation and met each of their needs.

In the Old Testament, King David found himself in a place of desperation more than once. In Psalm 18:6, we hear from David’s voice this cry of desperation when he says, "In my distress, I called to the Lord; I cried to God for help."

If we are going to get help from God with our problems and predicaments, we might need to cry out in desperation. Desperation means that we realize there is no other place to turn except the Lord.

For those who are not followers of Jesus Christ, there is no other place to receive forgiveness, peace and eternal life than through him. We must be desperate enough to realize that if we don’t receive these, then there is eternal condemnation and judgment.

When an unbeliever realizes the truthfulness of this and the fact that none of us is guaranteed another day to live, then out of desperation they cry out to God for help, and he comes to their rescue.

Why is it that we can be so proud to think that we don’t need God or we go to him as a last resort? When we get desperate enough, we come humbly before him for help and he meets our need. May God put a spirit of desperation in our hearts so that we will seek him.
