Spring is in the air, and it is time for a good walk.
Walking is fun and healthy. Members of the Liberty County community realize the benefits of walking can be physical and spiritual, which is why they are going to use this form of exercise to help the Liberty County Homeless Coalition outreach efforts.
According to Adna “Chad” Chaffee, on April 6, members of the community will participate in a five-mile walk to commemorate Good Friday.
“The walk will begin at noon at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church on Shaw Road and culminate at St. Philips Episcopal Church on General Stewart Way in Hinesville,” Chaffee said. “We will meet at Mt Zion’s parking lot at 11 am. Dr. M.L. Jackson, pastor of Mt. Zion, and Hinesville’s Mayor Jim Thomas will speak briefly before we begin the walk. The walk is sponsored by the Liberty County Homeless Coalition where Pastor Hermon Scott is the president.”
Other members of the coalition include Liberty County Commission Chairman John McIver, District 5 Commissioner Gary Gilliard, Pastor Douglas Harn of Victory Assembly, Manna House Director Pastor Katrina Deason of Liberty Prayer Chapel, Dr. Alicia Kirk of the Kirk Healing Center, Pastor M.L. Jackson and Father William Lea of St. Philips Episcopal Church.
“We sent letters to approximately 70 churches in the community, and we have support from the mayor of Hinesville, Hinesville chief of police, chamber of commerce, YMCA and the Liberty County Board of Commissioners,” Chaffee said.
“This is a five mile walk to raise funds for the coalition in support of the food and shelter programs they support. The homeless coalition will then distribute the money to organizations such as the Manna House and Kirk Healing Center and churches to help those in need. Liberty County is known for helping others,” he said. “Our goal is to raise $20,000-$25,000. This money can help a lot of people, and anyone who wants to participate is encouraged to do so. Participants in the walk can pledge whatever amount they want. Churches and organizations can form their teams for the walk.
“Why Good Friday? Good Friday is the day we remember our Lord’s sacrifice for us. It is only fitting that we take this time to give Him thanks and to support those in need with the gifts he has bestowed upon us. The premise of the walk is taken from Matthew 25:40,” Chaffee said.
Participants are also asked to bring canned good. The canned goods will be given to the Manna House.
