Head start

Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority, Inc. administers the head Start Program from its main office in Brunswick, Georgia. It operates eleven centers, in nine counties; and is presently funded to serve a total of 917 preschool children. Centers are located in the following counties: Bryan, Evans, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, Wayne and two in both Camden and Tattnall.

Presently all centers are accepting applications for the 2007-08 school year. Children for the Head Start program must be at least three years old, and not older than five years old, on or before September 1, 2007.

The Head Start program provides individualized and group child activities helping children fulfill their developmental potential. While at the center, each child is considered a unique person with exploring minds and educational needs. We believe each child has the potential for future growth. This approach is also well suited to help children with special needs. In addition, the program offers two meals and a snack daily, parent involvement activities; health and dental exams; as well as speech and language screenings. There is no cost to parents for this program.

Applications for eligibility may be completed at the center. The following documents will be required: birth certificate, proof of income (2006 W-2 or tax forms, three consecutive pay stubs, Social Security or DFCS letter, letter from employer, etc.), State of GA Pre-School Immunization Record (Form 3231), and a physician’s letter for any child with special needs. For enrollment, the following documents will be requested: social security numbers for each family member, a physical examination, a dental examination, and a current Medicaid, PeachCare or private insurance card if applicable.

For additional information about the program, please contact Donna Brewton and Ann Chance, the family service coordinators at the center at 653-4990.

Note: A Head Start representative will be at Hardees in Richmond Hill from 9 a.m.-noon., Thursday, June 21 and at the Richmond Hill Library from noon-6 p.m. taking applications. If 15 or more children qualify for Head Start then the school may be able to provide a bus to the center in Pembroke for children in Richmond Hill.
