Road closure

Richmond Way, from Hwy. 144 to Nelson Drive, will be closed to all through traffic from approximately 7:30 a.m. Aug. 18 to approximately 7:30 a.m. Aug. 25.

Median work will be done on Hwy. 144 at the entrance to the Richmond Place subdivision. The work will be performed by Clifton Construction Company.

Register to vote

The deadline to register to vote to be eligible to cast a ballot in the Sept. 16 Special Election is Monday.

Download and complete a voter registration application by visiting http://sos.georgia.gov/ElectionCenter. Also find applications at the public library, schools and any government office.

Family reunion

The Cribbs, Harvey and Wise family reunion will be Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Wetlands Center in J.F. Gregory Park. Paper plates, napkins, eating utensils and ice will be provided. Please bring several covered dishes. For more information, call Sandra Butler at 756-3537.

Grand opening

The new branch of Bryan Bank and Trust is going to have its grand opening Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a community event similar to last year’s Summerfest. There will be free barbecue, as well as prizes and lots of fun. Members of the Bryan Bank and Trust will be there to meet and mingle with the community.

Celebrate history

Leopold’s Ice Cream will host its fourth annual Birthday Party Celebration on Sunday. The event will be from noon-10 p.m., with an "alumni" reunion of original and current employees from noon-3 p.m. The cake-cutting ceremony will commence at 3 p.m. and everyone will be invited to help blow out the candles.

The special flavor of the day, naturally, will be birthday cake ice cream and there will be a 50 percent off special running on all old-fashioned ice cream sodas. Bill Edwards’ Sounds Exciting will provide music and dancing.

This party is unique because owners Stratton and Mary Leopold are celebrating both the date they opened the legendary family business – Leopold’s Ice Cream – at the new location on Broughton Street in 2004, as well as Leopold’s 89 years of history in Savannah.

Girl Scouts

The local Girl Scouts chapter is hosting two upcoming events for girls and adults.

An Open House will be Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Richmond Hill and a Girl Scout Sampler will be Saturday, Aug. 23, 10-11 a.m. at the Richmond Hill Library.

Girls aged 5–17 and their parents/guardians are invited to attend either or both events.

Parents should also know the Girl Scouts cannot guarantee a child will be placed in a troop unless there is sufficient adult leadership. For new troops to be formed, the Scouts need the support of adult volunteers, 18 or older. Training is available free of charge.

Join Cub Scouts

Cub Scout Packs 400, 486, and 527 will be hosting a fall recruitment campaign, Thursday from 7-8 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Primary School in the Multi-Purpose Room.

The Packs would like to invite fathers and sons to become a part of one of America’s leading values-driven organizations. Cub Scouts is for any boy in 1st-5th grade. Information will also be available about Boy Scouts, for boys in 6th grade to age 18.

Kids fishing

The Bryan County Bass Masters Fishing Club will host its annual kids fishing tournament Saturday, Aug. 23 from 8 a.m. until noon at J.F. Gregory Park in Richmond Hill.

The bait will be furnished, just bring your pole and tackle! There will be four age group divisions: ages 1-3 will weigh in their catch at 10 a.m.; ages 4-7, 8-11, and 12-15 will weigh in their catch at noon. There will also be a chance to win $100. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There will be prize drawings and trophies awarded; and hamburgers, hot dogs and cokes.

North Chamber

The next "Networking@Noon" for the North Bryan Chamber of Commerce, Inc., will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the J. Dixie Harn Community Center in Pembroke.

The guest speaker is Melinda Roell, Art Development Director of the Averitt Center for the Arts in Statesboro. She will discuss the positive impact of the arts on community and business growth.

Kick off Hoopla

Bryan County will soon have its first no-kill shelter and adoption center for animals.

The South Bryan Animal Welfare League is celebrating with a Membership Kick-Off Hoopla on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at the Ft. McAllister Marina from 6-8p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The public is invited to come and learn about the non-profit group’s plans and to become supporting members of the SBAWL; Membership fees start at $25.

Ladies Lunch

Labor Day

The annual Labor Day Program at Fort McAllister will be Saturday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

This Labor Day weekend, come see some of the trades necessary in keeping a Civil War fort in working order. The program will include blacksmithing and musket firing demonstrations, as well as cannon firing. Learn about Civil War cooking and take part in some old fashion games. Also partake in a game of baseball…Civil War style! There will be fun for the whole family all day long. The cost is $4 for adults and $2.50 for children.

Monday, Sept. 1, join the fort on a scenic canoe trip down Redbird Creek. Participants will see the wildlife around Ft. McAllister while cruising down the creek, stopping to explore the sandbars along the way. To reserve a canoe, you must go to the visitor center and register ($10 fee) before Sept. 1. Life jackets will be provided and participants should be at the visitor center at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, with a departure time of 9 a.m. There is a parking fee of $3.

OLLI classes

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the USCB is now accepting registrations for classes in the fall term.

OLLI Fall term classes begin Sept. 15, with more than 180 classes to choose in a wide variety of subjects Classes will be offered at sites at Pineland Station Mall on Hilton Head, the USCB South Campus in Bluffton, the USCB North Campus in Beaufort and in Jasper County.

Blood shortage

More donors are needed immediately to put an end to the current shortage. While all blood types are needed, types O and B are in immediate demand.

There are 14 blood donor centers across Georgia, and blood drives are held daily throughout the Region. Appointments for donations can be made by calling 1-800-GIVE LIFE (448-3543) or by visiting www.redcrossblood.org.

Coastal meeting

The Georgia Coastal Management Program’s (GCMP) Coastal Advisory Council’s summer quarterly meeting will be Aug. 20, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Wetlands Center.

Jazzercise

Jazzercise classes held at New Beginnings Community Church in Richmond Hill will be having an Open House Aug. 25-29.

The public is invited to join the group for a free class during that week and see what Jazzercise has to offer. Jazzercise combines elements of dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, kickboxing and more to create programs for people of every age and fitness level.

Bike Run

There will be a "Bike Run and Turkey Dinner" for a family whose 14-year-old son has been diagnosed with Leukemia. The ride will be Aug. 23, beginning at Johns V Twin Cycle Shop at the L. Scott Stell Park in Effingham. The cost is $25 per person. There will be a raffle and door prizes.

Landscaping

Pesticide school will be held Monday, Aug. 18 for Applying Pesticides Correctly and Monday, Aug. 25 for Ornamentals and Turfgrass Pest Control. Both classes are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Bamboo Farm. The seminar will tell you what’s important to know, and what’s not.

Cost of the school is $20 per person for the two days, payable at the door, but pre-registration is required. Training manuals and study guides must be obtained from the University of Georgia prior to the seminar, call 706-542-8999.

Wormsloe

The Wormsloe historic site in Savannah will present a special program, "Tools And Skills That Built A Colony" on Aug. 30 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Included in the program will be craft demonstrations from the colonial period such as woodworking, blacksmithing, candle making, weaving and more.
