Public hearing

The City of Pembroke will hold a public hearing May 6 at 8 a.m. The purpose of this meeting is to inform the public of the purpose and process to be followed for updating the City’s Solid Waste Management Plan as mandated by state law.

YMCA fair

An Open House-Healthy Kids Day with half-off the joiner’s fee will be at the Richmond Hill YMCA Saturday, May 3 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

It’s time to kickoff the summer! Join the local YMCA as they open their door for their annual open house. The YMCA pools will also officially open on Saturday, kicking off the swimming season. There will be fun-filled games, activities, face-painting and food. Kids can learn how to eat healthy and stay healthy. All events are free and open to the public. This is also a perfect opportunity to join the Y at half-off the joiners fee on Saturday. This is a cost-saving way for families to get in shape and have fun this summer. Retiree celebration

Carver Elementary School invites the community attend a retirement reception in honor of Carrie Manigo, "Celebrating 30 Years in Education," on May 15 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The event will be held at the school.

"PORKer" Run

The "PORKer" Run to Tybee is Saturday, May 3 to benefit the American Diabete’s Association’s 2008 "Kiss-a-Pig" campaign. Dr. Raphael Roybal, an orthopaedic surgeon with Chatham Orthopaedic Associates, is the Kiss-a-Pig candidate hosting the run.

The ride starts at Savannah Harley-Davidson on River Street and continues to Tubby’s Tank House in Thunderbolt, The Islander on Wilmington Island, Dewey’s Dockside and ends at North Beach Grill on Tybee Island. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the first bike out at 11 a.m., last bike out at noon and last bike in at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and $5 for additional riders or poker hands.

Other upcoming events hosted by Roybal include a Beach Party at North Beach Grill Saturday, May 10, 4-7 p.m. with entertainment by The Long Awaited band, drink specials and raffle prizes.

Kiss-a-Pig is a unique fundraising event that pits local community leaders against each other in a contest to raise votes (each dollar equals one vote) for their campaigns. The candidate with the most votes wins the chance to kiss the pig. Insulin was originally developed from the pancreas of pigs and therefore the pig is honored with this campaign.

Help the Wall

The Moving Wall, a traveling replica of the Vietnam Veteran’s tribute in Washington, D.C., is coming to Richmond Hill June 12-16.

Ranger Camp

Ft. McAllister’s Junior Ranger Camp, for children ages 8–12, will be June 23-27 from 9 a.m. to noon. Junior Rangers will experience nature first-hand, exploring Georgia’s fascinating history while enjoying outdoor recreational activities, such as hiking Fort McAllister’s scenic trails as part of the GO (Get Outdoors) Georgia program. Memorial Day

Ft. McAllister’s annual Memorial Day Weekend Program will be Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the park off Hwy. 144. Cost is $4 for adults and $2.50 for children. The program will focus on the life of the common Confederate soldier with musket and cannon demos and special salutes fired in honor of those who have died in war. Girl Scouts

Girl Scouts is recruiting adult volunteers to help today’s girls become tomorrow’s leaders. They specifically need adults to serve on their local Service Unit Team and to serve as leaders and co-leaders for the new membership year, starting this fall.

An informational meeting for all interested adult volunteers will be Monday, May 19, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Library.

Troop leaders and co-leaders guide and lead a group of girls so that they learn to develop their abilities as individuals and as members of a group. Troops of all ages are being formed.

Sunset Party

Sunset Party at the Coast will be Saturday, May 3, 4-8 p.m. at the Sunbury Crab Company in Sunbury. There is a $5.00 donation to get in the door and all tips benefit American Diabetes Association. There will be live music and there is plenty of dock space available for attendees.

Eco-friendly art

The new exhibit at Gallery S.P.A.C.E. from May 2-27 is "Reincarnated: Art Showcasing Reduce, Reuse & Recycle."

Children's crusade

"Magnolia Days"

"Magnolia Days" is a week of events for all Magnolia Manor residents, beginning Sunday, May 11 with a Mother’s Day Lunch and ending Friday May 16 with an Irish Variety Concert and hot dog roast. Other events include an ice cream social, Bingo and a wide variety of musical entertainment.

May 8, the manor's monthly Renaissance Lecture will feature Crysell Stewart of Dimensions art gallery in Savannah. She will be discussing "How to Critique a Painting." New exhibit opening

Leahy Art Gallery, Fine Art and Custom Framing will have the opening of their next art exhibition Friday, May 9. Choir fundraiser

The Pete Broxton Youth Choir of the Bryan Neck Missionary Baptist Church is having a fundraiser dinner on May 17 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. on the church grounds. St. Joseph’s/Candler will be performing mammograms to screen for breast cancer in its mobile screening unit May 7 and 21 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Medical Group in Pembroke; and May 8 at Bryan County Health Department, Richmond Hill. Appointments are necessary, call 819-6800.

Boy Scout fundraiser

Richmond Hill Boy Scout Troop 527 will host its annual Delicious Chicken Dinner Saturday, May 3, noon-4 p.m. at Richmond Hill United Methodist Church. The dinner includes a half grilled chicken, green beans, potato salad, roll and iced tea (dine in or take out). Tickets are $7 per dinner. Desserts will be sold separately.

The Delicious Chicken Dinner, a long-time Richmond Hill tradition, is Troop 527’s only fund-raiser. Look for Scouts selling tickets around their neighborhoods and local businesses or call 756-4561 to purchase tickets.

Pembroke yard sale

The city of Pembroke will host its annual City-wide Yard Sale on Saturday, May 3 from 8 a.m. until noon. Booth spaces are available for $10.00 each. There is no charge for non-profit organizations. If you would like to reserve a booth space, please call Tonya at 653-5554.

Pork fundraiser

The Pembroke Christian Church, Hwy. 280, Pembroke, will be selling grilled pork steak dinners on Saturday, May 3, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Each dinner will include a grilled pork steak, green beans, potato salad, bread, and slice of pound cake for $6. Bulk pork sausage by the pound will also be for sale. New hours

The Richmond Hill Historical Society Museum announces its new operating hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Saturday.

They now have a Facilitator on sight to answer questions and guide people through the museum.

Please ask about their monthly lecture series on the impact of our coastal history and how it affects us today. The programs feature local historians, authors, re-enactors and musicians.

BCITC meetings

The Bryan County Interagency Transition Council will hold its last meeting for this school year May 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Center at the St. Anne’s church. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

Katrena Hicks from Goodwill Industries will be the guest speaker. She will discuss services and possible employment opportunities that Goodwill offers to individuals with disabilities.

Ghost tour

On May 9, a Ghost Tour Walk with Dogs event will be hosted by St. Almo, a Savannah social networking group for dog owners. All proceeds from the ghost tour will go toward the Bryan Animal Caregivers Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program. For more information, visit www.bryanac.org or call 727-2694.

Theatre camp

For Summer 2008, GIAHA will have two theatre session to introduce students to the world of the stage.

Session 1 is the Acting on the Stage Camp, open to ages 8-14 and will feature games, improvisations and scripted material to explore and expand the theatrical experience. Session 1 will be June 16-27, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. The camp finishes with a production of an original play created by the students Friday, June 27 at noon.

Session 2 is a new Summer Musical Theater Camp, for ages 5-18. It provides training in singing and dancing as well as general stage skills, culminating in a production of "Broadway Bound," a revue show featuring great songs from the classic Broadway hits. It will be July 14-26, at the Ritz Theatre, Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-noon. The production will be presented Friday evening, July 25, and a Saturday matinee July 26.

All productions are free and open to all.

Golf tourney

Gather up your favorite clubs, tees and gloves and get ready for the Second Annual Police Foundation Golf Tournament, Wednesday, June 18, to benefit the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Foundation (SCMPF.)
