Tax relief night

The Richmond Hill Post Office will be selling stamps and collecting and cancelling tax returns on April 15 from 4-7 p.m.

The United States Department of Agriculture, through the USDA Rural Development Agency, has made available low-interest loan funds to income-eligible applicants to purchase a home in Bryan County. The Root Ball

Savannah’s Ben Tucker Jazz Trio will perform in Richmond Hill Saturday, April 26th at 7 p.m. for the Coastal Bryan Tree Foundation’s Root Ball fundraiser at the Speir-Brogdon Building.

The Root Ball, which is open to the public, is an evening of great jazz music, food, and fun. There will be a live and silent auction with a wide range of items. Local WTOC television favorite, Sonny Dixon will emcee the event.

Free driving course

The Coastal Health District is offering parents and teens a free course to help them prepare now for a lifetime of safe driving. The program is called Georgia Teens Ride with P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing Incidents of Driver Error). The next class will be Thursday in Pembroke.

Miss BCHS

The Bryan County High School Booster’s Club is sponsoring the 19th annual Miss Bryan County High School Pageant. All proceeds go to support BCHS academic, literary, and sports programs. The pageant will be Saturday, May 3, at Lanier Primary School beginning at 1 p.m. for divisions Teeny through Petite and 7 p.m. for Junior and Miss divisions.

The age divisions are Teeny Miss (ages 1 - 2), Tiny Miss (ages 3 - 5), Little Miss (ages 6 - 8), Petite Miss (ages 9 - 11), Junior Miss (ages 12 - 14), and Miss BCHS (grades 9 - 12). The Miss BCHS contestants must attend Bryan County High School. Teeny through Petite divisions are open to anyone.

Puttin' on the Ritz

Magnolia Manor will be holding "Puttin’ on the Ritz" Monday, April 14 at 7:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature New Mexico’s own Surgite Dance Company. Mammograms

St. Joseph’s/Candler will be performing mammograms to screen for breast cancer in its mobile screening unit May 7 and 21 at St. Joseph’s/Candler Medical Group in Pembroke; and May 8 at Bryan County Health Department, Richmond Hill. Appointments are necessary, call 819-6800.

 

Boy Scout fundraiser

Richmond Hill Boy Scout Troop 527 will host its annual Delicious Chicken Dinner Saturday, May 3, noon-4 p.m. at Richmond Hill United Methodist Church. The dinner includes a half grilled chicken, green beans, potato salad, roll and iced tea (dine in or take out). Tickets are $7 per dinner. Desserts will be sold separately.

The Delicious Chicken Dinner, a long-time Richmond Hill tradition, is Troop 527’s only fund-raiser. Look for Scouts selling tickets around their neighborhoods and local businesses or call 756-4561 to purchase tickets by April 28.

 

Landscape training

Saturday, April 18, the Bamboo Farm & Coastal Gardens will offer the first in a series of training seminars geared toward certification for professional landscaping. The seminar is from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and the $25 fee includes lunch. Advance registration is a must. To register, call 921-5460 and attendees can pay in advance or at the door by cash or check only.

 

Building better

The Sapelo Island Coastal Training Program is having a High Performance School Buildings Workshop for school board members, superintendents, facility managers, and procurement and curriculum personnel from coastal county school districts as well as area architects, engineers, and construction managers to illustrate the benefits of building high-performance, sustainable school buildings.

The workshop will be at the Jekyll Island Convention Center Tuesday, April 22 for architects, engineers and builders and Wednesday, April 23 for school system personnel from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Registration is open until April 15. For more information, contact Suzanne VanParreren at (912) 485-2251.

 

HS juniors night

Richmond Hill High School will hold their junior parent night April 17 at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. The event, "Exploring the College Application Process," is being sponsored by the RHHS Guidance Staff.

Representatives from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Georgia and the University of Alabama will be available to answer college admissions questions.

Free counseling

The Military and Family Life Consultant (MFLC) program at Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield is offered through Army Community Service. The program provides free counseling by licensed social workers specializing in marriage and family issues, including counseling for children and youth. The City of Pembroke is having its Annual Spring Debris Pick-up April 14-18. The pickups are free of charge, call 653-4413 to schedule a pickup date.

 

Gospel sing

Abundant Life Church of God will have a gospel sing on Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m.

Art show

Arts On the Coast is pleased to present its third annual Members Art Show April 25-26. The show will be at the Wetlands Center in Gregory Park in Richmond Hill from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday. The show is open to the general public and there is no charge to attend. Arts On the Coast looks forward to highlighting the creative talent and efforts of local visual artists. Come share their vision to promote arts in our area.

 

Economic stimulus

Filing a Georgia Individual Income Tax Return is not required in order to receive a Federal Stimulus payment.

In May, economic stimulus payments will be sent to more than 130 million households nationwide.

The IRS said in order to receive the federal stimulus payment, taxpayers must file a 2007 federal individual income tax return.

Taxpayers who are uncertain as to whether to file a Georgia return should review the filing requirements on the Department of Revenue’s website at www.dor.ga.gov. Use the link for forms, individual and review Form IT-511.

For additional information concerning the federal economic stimulus payment, log onto the IRS web site at www.irs.gov.

The federal and state filing deadline is Tuesday, April 15.

 

Homecoming

Pembroke Assembly of God, 1514 Bacontown Road, invites everyone to their Homecoming Sunday, April 13 at 11 a.m.

Commodity foods

The Coastal Georgia Area Community Action Authority will be distributing USDA surplus commodity foods to eligible residents April 16-18.

Any household whose total gross income is less than the State established poverty guidelines for the appropriate household size is eligible. Persons picking up food are requested to bring a bag or box container.

Food will be distributed from the following sites: Wednesday, April 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Richmond Hill Courthouse; Thursday, April 17, 2-6 p.m., Pembroke City Hall; and Friday, April 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Pembroke City Hall. For additional information, call Carolyn Frasier at 653-4993.

 

Kindergartners

Kindergarten orientation and registration for the fall of 2008 will be at Richmond Hill Primary School. Students currently in a pre-K program and/or who will be 5-years-old on or before Sept. 1 may register. The dates are April 15-18 from 8:30-11 a.m.

Parents of RHPS students must be Bryan County residents and provide proof of residency and physical address as well as their child’s social security card, copy of their birth certificate, current immunization records and an eye-ear-dental exam form.

 

Steak fundraiser

The Pembroke Christian Church, Hwy. 280, Pembroke, will be selling grilled pork steak dinners on Sat., May 3, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Each dinner will include a grilled pork steak, green beans, potato salad, bread, and slice of pound cake for $6. Bulk pork sausage by the pound will also be for sale. All proceeds will go towards the church building fund.

 

UW fundraiser

The Clothes Line, a partnership of the United Way and the City of Pembroke, located at 53 N. College St., Pembroke, will have a winter sale April 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, and 16. All items that cost $1 or more will be half off; all children’s items that are 50 cents will be half off also. The Clothes Line is open from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

 

Energy Oasis 5K

Energy Oasis will hold its second annual 5K race on April 19 at 9 a.m. They have chosen the International Rett Syndrome Foundation to be the beneficiary of the race, with local Richmond Hill resident Amber Gant, 13, as their inspiration and representative. Business expo

The Richmond Hill and Bryan County 2008 Business & Consumer Expo is scheduled for April 18 and 19 at the Richmond Hill Recreation Center. The Friday event is slotted as a business to business gathering. The Saturday event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to the public, free of charge.

Spring cleaning

Richmond Hill will kick off Georgia Cities Week with three days of large item trash pickup starting Wednesday, April 16, through Friday, April 18. 

OMI will pick up curbside large items such as appliances, furniture and other bulky items normally not picked up by the regular trash service. All city residents should place their items on the curbside Wednesday morning by 7 a.m. for pickup.
