A Richmond Hill third-grade student placed third in the elementary-school division of the Live Oak Public Libraries 2015 Savannah Children’s Book Festival Poster Contest.

Lauren Shweiky, a homeschooled student, won the honor.

Live Oak Public Libraries will present the 2015 Savannah Children’s Book Festival Poster Contest Exhibit from Tuesday through Nov. 20 at the city of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs Gallery. This exhibit will feature nearly 300 designs submitted by students in the elementary-, middle-, and high-school and college categories from Liberty, Chatham, Effingham and neighboring counties.

The contest is held each spring, and students are challenged to create a poster that may be used in the promotion of the city of Savannah-sponsored Savannah Children’s Book Festival. This year’s festival is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, at Forsyth Park in Savannah. The 12th annual festival celebrates the joy of reading, the power of the written word and the magic of storytelling with children’s-book authors and illustrators from around the country.

In conjunction with the Children’s Book Festival, the library is hosting a Young Writers Contest. An award ceremony and reception for the winners, their families and writing teachers will take place at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5. The Cultural Affairs Gallery is located at 9 W. Henry St. in Savannah. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information, call 912-651-6783 or go to www.savannahga.gov/arts.

All events are free and open to the public.

The awards were presented May 8 during Honors Night at RHHS.

Wood plans to attend Green Mountain College in Vermont and major in environmental studies.

Vargas plans to attend Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee, to pursue a degree in either environmental studies or biology.

The garden club awards a $1,000 scholarship annually to a local high school senior who plans to major in a field related to environmental concerns, plants and/or gardening.

This year, due to having two exceptional candidates, the garden club awarded an additional $500 scholarship.

Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Richmond Hill recently named Caroline Odom as its student of the year.

The club each month during the school year names a student of the month, and the student of the year is chosen from among those winners.

Awards are based on academic performance, community involvement and leadership.

Monthly winners receive $100, with the annual winner getting a $1,000 scholarship.

The Exchange Club has been recognizing students for more than 30 years.

Odom will go on to compete in the Georgia District Exchange Club against students from across the state.
