Bryan County Elementary School parapro Sandy Holcombe was recently named the school’s parapro of the year for 2011 and was delighted by the honor.

"I appreciate and feel honored to be named parapro of the year," Holcombe said. Here’s what else she had to say about the award.

How long have you been a parapro and what started it?

I have been a parapro for a total of 12 years. I had always been a stay at home mom and just volunteered in my children’s classroom. When my youngest was about to start kindergarten I was offered a position as a para. I accepted the job. I have always enjoyed working with the children and helping the teachers.

What makes a good parapro?

In order to be a good para I feel you need to be dependable, flexible, able to roll with the punches and always able to find some humor, even if you have to dig deep for it.

What is it about Bryan County Elementary School that makes it special to you?

I work with some of the best people in the world at Bryan County Elementary. It takes everyone working together for the good of the children to help make them successful in their future.
