baseball

By Allen Cox, sports correspondent

On Friday night, the Cats rode down to Kingsland, Georgia and took care of some unfinished business. The Richmond Hill Wildcats swept a doubleheader, 13-5 and 11-0, with region opponent Camden County, and also swept the 3-game region series. With only one-week left in Region 6-1A play, the Cats could finish 2nd, and host at least the 1st round of the state playoffs, or finish 3rd, or 4th and have to travel.

In game #1, the Cats banged out 15 hits and scored 5 runs in both the 3rd and the 7th inning to put the home team away, 13-5. Joey Succi led the attack with 4 hits and drove in 4 runs. Noah Stone and Braxton Helsel each had 3 hits, scored twice, and drove in a run each. Bryce Smith added 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. Stone got a good win on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and 3 earned runs, despite struggling to find the strike zone. And David Willis relieved Stone and threw 3 solid innings. Camden only had 2 players get a hit, committed 6 errors, and used 5 pitchers to walk 6 Cats.

In the second game the Cats again hit the ball hard and often, with 10 different Wildcats getting a hit, and scoring 11 runs, to win 11-0. Stone and Smith each had 2 hits, and Davis Johnson scored 3 times. Aiden Babcock and Bryce Smith also each added 2 RBI’s. Senior Pitcher Landon Walker got the complete game 7-inning shutout, striking out 9, allowing only 2 hits, and not issuing a walk. Walker pitched a gem, throwing 61 pitches for a strike out of 79 total pitches. Camden County used 3 different pitchers and the team committed 3 errors.

The Richmond Hill Wildcats checked all the boxes Friday night in Kingsland. The Cats were patient at the plate, played exceptional defense, and got outstanding pitching. After hitting the ball hard all night, the Cats stole several bases, and kept pressure on the opponents pitchers for 14 innings.
