Two Richmond Hill athletes commit to Augusta University
Shane Rowand
Richmond Hill's Shane Rowand signs a letter of intent Wednesday afternoon to continue his track career at Augusta University.

Augusta University might want to consider changing its nickname from the Jaguars to the Wildcats.

Two athletes from Richmond Hill signed to continue their playing careers at Augusta, bringing the total to four this year.

Shane Rowand signed a letter of intent to run track at Augusta, while Morgan Hunter committed for softball. Will and Rachel Hammesfahr signed with the cross country team at Augusta last fall, and Tanner Hicks, a 2015 Richmond Hill graduate, is a distance runner for the Jaguars track team.

“They’ll have a cluster of support and they’re all really good kids,” said Levi Sybert, who coaches track and cross country for the Wildcats.

Rowand runs the 300-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash, and was part of the 4x400 relay team that qualified for the state track meet this season.

“I’ll probably run the hurdles and 4x400 there, but really I’ll do whatever they need me to,” he said.

Rowand, who plans to major in aerospace engineering, had considered attending a bigger school but chose Augusta so he could continue to run.

Hunter, a pitcher, is the fourth senior from Richmond Hill’s Region 3-AAAAA champion softball team who will play in college. Samantha Mault and Natalie Corbin signed earlier in the year with Armstrong State, and Jessica Kifferly will play a South Georgia State.

“Morgan grew every year and came in as a senior stronger than ever,” Coach Angie Hummeldorf said. “I couldn’t be more proud of her as a person and a student-athlete.”

Hunter, who wants to be a pathologist, said she chose Augusta because she can continue there with medical school.

“It was really about the academics, and the coaches and players are great,” she said.

Augusta University, formerly Georgia Regents University Augusta, is an NCAA Division II school and competes in the Peach Belt Conference.
