Hoops under way at Hendrix Park
HP-2

Basketball season is now under way at Hendrix Park. The 10U girls Hendrix Park team, coached by Dennis Seger and Richie Edwards, got their season started on Jan. 13 against Bloomingdale at Hendrix Park.

The team is made up of seven girls, five of which are new to the sport.

However, their inexperience did not show while the team racked up 44 points to Bloomingdale’s 7. They were led in scoring by Lydreyah Simmons scoring 14 points and Emily Shiver scoring 8 points, both newcomers to the game.

On Jan. 16 HP faced off against home park rival HP and recorded their second victory in a nail bitter that went down to the final minutes winning by only two points with a 19-17 score. Offense was led by Yasmine Crawford with 8 points and Emily Shiver with 6 points. A key factor in the win was the defense led by Lydreyah Simmons with 9 rebounds and 5 tie-ups and Logan Seger with 4 rebounds and 5 tie-ups.

On Jan. 20 the team played Garden City at home and recorded their third victory in as many games with a 23-7 final score. Leading the offense was Simmons with 8 points and Crawford with 7 points. Defensive play was led by Lianna Shuman, Alyssa Edwards and Abigail Kinard who took control of the court against a much larger and more experience Garden City team.

"They kept Garden City off balance throughout the whole game," Seger said. "I am very proud of all seven of the girls. Coach Edwards and I are very pleased with the team’s hard work which has put them 3-0 so early in the season."
