Cardenas signs for Malone University
The Wildcats senior currently plays a huge role for the boys’ lacrosse team, says head coach Tom Corbin.

Richmond Hill’s boys’ lacrosse program has been a model of consistency the last four years under coach Tom Corbin and one of the reasons has been the play of Adam Cardenas.

Cardenas, who excels as a long stick middie for the Wildcats, saw his efforts rewarded last Wednesday when he signed to play in college at Malone University, a Division II school located in Canton, Ohio. Malone is in its second year of lacrosse and is a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

“Adam is an excellent lacrosse player,” Corbin said. “He has contributed to the success of Richmond Hill over the last four years. He is a skilled LSM (long stick middie) who plays an integral part of our defensive team and transitions from defense to offense.

“Adam has developed his skills since middle school where he was introduced to lacrosse,” Corbin said. “He has participated in several travel teams locally over the last few years and continued to improve. He’s a key part of our man-down defense.”

The past four seasons have seen the Wildcats be one of the dominant teams in Class 5A-6A Area 7 Region play. Richmond Hill, currently 6-4 overall and 2-1 in region play, has finished second for three straight years while going 20-4 in region play, 34-23 overall.

During that stretch, Richmond Hill has advanced to the second round of the state playoffs the last two years after bowing out in the first round Cardenas’ freshman year.

Going into a non-region home game with South Carolina’s May River on Tuesday night Cardenas’ season statistics showed him with 20 ground balls, third on the team, and 12 takeaways–which is second on the team.

If the Wildcats are going to win the region or at least post a fourth-straight second-place finish they are going to have to do it by winning on the road as their three remaining region games are all away from home:  March 21 at Lakeside, March 29 at Evans and April 10 at South Effingham.

Richmond Hill’s lone remaining home game is with Benedictine on March 27.
