No guarantee of another day
pastor corner

Several years ago, I had, as part of my congregation, a lady who came faithfully to church, but her husband never came with her. He was a hard worker during his life and was really good to his neighbors. I remember the day that I visited with him and asked him about his relationship with God.

I asked him if he had opened his heart up to receive the forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ. I will never forget his response which went something like this: “Preacher, I know what I need to do and one day I am planning on doing it.

When I come to the place where I am about to leave this world, I will call you to come over and pray with me.”

I attempted to persuade him to do what he needed to do then because he had no guarantee that he would have that opportunity to make his peace with God right before he died.

The huge truth is that we don’t trust in Jesus to just miss hell, but we do it because we desire to serve our maker and fulfill the purpose He has for us in this life.

Sadly, I never did receive that phone call and I moved away from that area. It is my understanding that this gentleman died suddenly of a heart attack some years later without ever making things right between he and the Lord.

The scripture very plainly says in Proverbs 27:1, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring”. We never know when our last day on this earth will be, but we do know we can be ready to meet our God. We can know that we possess eternal life.

1 John 5:13 reveals this truth when it says, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life”.

In other words, we are not guaranteed another day to live on this earth, but we can live with the guarantee of spending eternity in heaven when we do leave this life.
