There is a song that we used to sing in church intitled, “Count your blessings”. The chorus went like this, “Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings see what God has done”.
We can get so busy in our lives and can dwell on our present issues so that we forget to acknowledge all our past blessings from God.
The other day I was reminded of how blessed I am. We were grilling some hamburgers, and the grill became completely ingulfed with flames on our screened in porch. One of the family went outside to check on the burgers as the flames were crawling up the wall and into the soffit of the house. In a few more minutes the fire would have been into the attic and possibly out of control. Thankfully the fire was put out with no real damage.
How many times have we barely avoided a traffic accident or worried about a physical issue that turned out to be minor? Think about the things we take for granted, like our eyesight or food, water, shelter and clothing.
The greatest blessing we can attain is the gift of salvation offered by God, made possible through the sacrificial death of His Son Jesus Christ. Even in the midst of tragedy there are lessons for us to learn and in the end the believer in Jesus still wins.
So, today, count your blessings and give thanks.
