A Florida-based truck driver was killed on Intestate 95 on Wednesday when his 18-wheeler collided with another tractor trailer near Riceboro, Georgia State Patrol Trooper A.M. Cheney said.
The accident happened shortly before 8 p.m. at mile marker 71 in the northbound lane. Cheney said Evgenii Gasca, 37, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and his passenger, Farkhat Bakiev, 47, also of Brooklyn, had pulled onto the road shoulder to check on a load of refrigerated goods they were hauling to New Jersey. As Gasca attempted to re-enter the interstate, a tractor trailer, driven by Marcos Costa, 28, of Palm Coast, Fla., struck the rear left portion of Gasca’s rig, heavily damaging it.
Costa’s truck veered onto the left shoulder and sailed into the woods, striking several trees and rolling onto its side before coming to a stop. Firefighters cut Costa from the vehicle using the jaws of life. He was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team out of Reidsville.
