There is a chance that a tropical system in the Atlantic could develop into a storm and be in our area over the weekend or early next week.

“I just wanted everyone to be aware and monitor,” the as yet unnamed system, Liberty County Emergency Management Director Mike Hodges said in an alert this morning.

The system, which the National Hurricane Center is labeling as “Disturbance 1” at this point since there is another system east of it, has a 50 percent chance of developing into a storm in the next five days, the center reports. There is a depression, “Fiona” west of the disturbances, but it is also farther north and not expected to threaten the Southeast coast.

The second disturbance was just spotted this morning has 100 percent chance of forming into a hurricane within the next two days, but is still far to the east of the first disturbance.
