Fort Stewart authorities released the name of a 3rd Infantry Division soldier who was stabbed to death Dec. 8.
“The soldier was Spc. Alante L. Whiting, 22, of Westland, Mich.,” Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said. “An intelligence analyst, Spc. Whiting was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd ID. He joined the Army in May 2008.”
Whiting was seen bleeding and in distress near his barracks building around 9:30 p.m. Dec. 8 by a commercial delivery person, Larson said. The delivery person immediately called Fort Stewart police, he said. Whiting was transported by Fort Stewart EMS to Winn Army Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Whiting had just returned from a 12-month deployment to Iraq approximately 18 hours before the incident, Larson said.
“Fort Stewart officials have reason to believe Spc. Whiting was the (alleged) aggressor in what Army Criminal Investigation Command investigators suspect to be a domestic altercation,” he said.
The stabbing is still under investigation by the CID. Fort Stewart public affairs had no additional information available for release.
