A man driving a 1986 GMC Safari Van was killed Thursday on Fort Stewart when he veered off the road and hit a tree.

Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson confirmed the accident occurred at about 4 a.m., just off Highway 144 east near mile marker 10.

The driver apparently lost control of his vehicle, ran off the left side of the road and into a tree behind cantonment fencing, Larson said. He said the man's vehicle caught fire after the impact.

The victim has not been identified

"The victim is not affiliated with the military or with Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield," Larson said. "He was taken to Winn Army Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 5:48 a.m."

The accident is being investigated by Fort Stewart traffic accident investigators and the criminal investigation division, he said. Larson said the man's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
