Two men who set off a search Tuesday night and Wednesday morning for a missing kayaker are unharmed, according to Bryan County Fire and Emergency Services.

The incident began around 5 p.m. Tuesday when, Ryan Crawford, 24, and Jason Bremen, set out to spend an afternoon on the Ogeechee River, Crawford in a kayak while Bremen was in a dingy.

Crawford’s kayak capsized, and when he tried to get into Bremen’s boat it began taking on water, authorities said. After both men tried to make it to shore, Brennan was able to get there around 11 p.m. and flagged down a woman near FishTales at Fort McAllister Marina.

She called 911 and according to BCES Deputy Chief Michael Dick, a search for Crawford was immediately put in motion.

Dick said several boats with a total of 11 emergency personnel began searching the waters for Crawford, without any success, calling out his name in hopes of locating him.

“The fog was so heavy during the course of the search, for safety reasons we decided to call it off” Dick said.

According to Dick, around 4:30 a.m. Crawford made his way to shore along with his kayak, where he was treated and released by medical personnel.
