SAVANNAH — The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment based at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah has received the first of its new CH-47F Chinook helicopters. Eventually, the unit expects to have 12 of the aircraft — distinctive for the twin rotors that allow them to transport more troops and heavier loads.
The new model’s upgrades include digital gauges in the cockpit and improved aviation systems.
Lt. Col. Mike Higginbotham, the battalion commander, says the new helicopters give soldiers a better awareness of their surroundings while flying in difficult conditions.
